Shocking Upset: Mohun Bagan’s Dramatic 1-2 Defeat Against Bashundhara Kings in AFC Cup 2023-24!
“The Indian football team initially secured the lead with Liston Colaco’s goal in the Group D encounter held in Dhaka but failed to maintain their advantage. Mohun Bagan is set to face Odisha FC in their upcoming match.”
In Group D of the AFC Cup 2023-24, the Indian football club, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, faced a 1-2 defeat against Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings. This intense match took place at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka on a Tuesday.
The encounter began with Liston Colaco (17’) from Mohun Bagan Super Giant taking the lead in the football match. However, the home team, Bashundhara Kings, managed to turn the tables with two goals from Miguel Figueira (44’) and Robinho (80’).
Despite this loss, both Mohun Bagan SG and Bashundhara Kings have accumulated seven points from four matches. Nevertheless, it’s the Bangladeshi team that leads Group D, based on their head-to-head performance. In their previous fixture last month, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw.
The match commenced with an intense battle, with both teams fiercely contesting possession. Mohun Bagan Super Giant appeared to have the upper hand in terms of goal-scoring opportunities. Manveer Singh hit the side netting, while Liston Colaco, Hugo Boumous, and Samad Abdul Samad missed promising chances for the Mariners.
Ultimately, Liston Colaco broke the deadlock. Following Jason Cummings’ left-wing cross, which was parried by Bashundhara’s goalkeeper Hasan Srabon, Liston capitalized on the rebound and calmly slotted the ball into the net, giving Mohun Bagan the lead.
The home team had an opportunity to level the score shortly after when Miguel Figueira found himself one-on-one with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, but he skied his shot. Bashundhara began to gain momentum in the match, particularly with Robinho, who looked dangerous on the left flank.
After several missed opportunities, the home team finally equalized just before halftime, with Miguel Figueira redeeming himself for his earlier miss by burying a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner, assisted by Didier Brossou.
In the second half, both teams had their chances as the play transitioned frequently from one end to the other. The home side came close to taking the lead around the 50-minute mark, but Robinho’s long-range shot rattled the right post and went wide.
Shortly after the 60-minute mark, Rakib Hossain dribbled into the box and took a shot, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Vishal Kaith. Mohun Bagan’s Cummings found the back of the Bashundhara goal ten minutes later, but it was disallowed due to an offside.
The home team finally secured the winning goal through Robinho, who had a stellar performance. The Brazilian found space inside the Mohun Bagan box, took a touch, and expertly sent Kaith the wrong way.
In their next AFC Cup 2023-24 Group D match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant will host fellow Indian club Odisha FC at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on November 27.
